BIENNALE DELLO STRETTO 2024 AWARDS
Architects in great numbers, alongside designers and artists, but also mayors, writers, and journalists who embraced and shared the spirit of the Biennale: yesterday, at the Archaeological Museum in Reggio Calabria, the award ceremony of La Biennale dello Stretto took place.
The three directors – Mariangela Cama, Alfonso Femia, and Francesca Moraci – selected outstanding architectural projects submitted by both national and international studios.
For the Architecture section: Demogo and Space Travellers Architects;
for the Landscape section: Rozana Montiel (Mexico);
for the International section: Chamms Arouise (France); La Col (Barcelona); Ruderal (Georgia);
for the Imaginary Realism section: the Politecnico di Milano, with a theme proposed by Ico Migliore for students of the Master’s Degree in Interior and Spatial Design (2022–2023), and the University of Basilicata, with a project led by Ina Macaione and Laura Pavia for students of the Phenomenology of Architecture course.
For the Design section: ADI (Italian Association for Industrial Design) – national board and the delegations from Calabria and Sicily. An installation and the work of an artist were also presented.
To give substance to the Biennale’s core themes of crossing boundaries and cultural contamination, the directors selected three works for the Narrated Landscapes section:
a novel, Farewell, Ghosts by Nadia Terranova;
a novel-song, La cotogna di Istanbul;
an essay, The Landscape is a Monster by Annalisa Metta.
For the Photography section: Marco Introini, architect and photographer.
For the Art section: the Nike Association, Irene Calabrò with Spazio Taverna – an independent installation – and Giuseppe Bonaccorso, both artists under the curatorship of Angela Pellicanò.
And then, the people: two major architects – Massimo Pica Ciamarra (Italy) and Giancarlo Mazzanti (Colombia) – featured in the final event of December; and all those who deeply believed in the project, supported it, and helped it grow in meaning and substance: the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, represented by Mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà and Deputy Mayor Carmelo Versace; Giusy Caminiti, Mayor of Villa San Giovanni; Pasquale Piroso, a contemporary patron and architect with a strong artistic sensibility; Giuseppe Smorto, journalist (formerly Deputy Editor of la Repubblica until 2020); and Rocco Alessandro Repaci, Mayor of Campo Calabro, who designated Forte Batteria Siacci as an exhibition venue for the Biennale dello Stretto, supporting the initiative from its very inception.
